Dr. Lucas Knotter
Haere mai
My name is Lucas, and I am a Lecturer in Politics and International Studies at the University of Bath (United Kingdom).
My research marries questions of secessionist conflict with traditional and critical theories of international security. In my research, I offer an original view of the practices and norms of state creation, innovating deep theoretical knowledge of international politics towards new international security questions and perspectives.
This research has produced work on de facto statehood (Ethnopolitics), declarations of independence (Review of International Studies), and international order (Global Studies Quarterly). My book centres on classical realism and the representation, emancipation, and agency of de facto states in international politics. I have also contributed book chapters on interpretive methodologies and humanitarian intervention.
I am pursuing a number of other research projects – respectively on 'Narcissism and Overpopulation in International Politics', on 'The (International) Politics of Sovereignty Translation in Aotearoa New Zealand', and on 'Benedict Anderson and De Facto Statehood'.
I have extensive university teaching and supervision experience in multiple countries, on topics such as IR theory, classical and contemporary political theory, foreign policy analysis, geopolitics, international security, and secession and self-determination.
